This is the shareware version of Quake 1.06, which contains the first 8 levels. This version will NOT work with XTRA's Quake server, for that you will need to get a copy of the registered version.

System Requirements:

Before you download the Quake shareware files, please check the list of system requirements below to ensure your computer will run Quake.

Personal Computer with a Pentium Processor.
16 megabytes to run in a Win95 DOS Box.
A Sound Blaster or 100% compatible sound card is highly recommended.
40 megabytes available hard disk space.

Downloading Quake:

There are two ways to download Quake from XTRA...

As a single 8.8 meg zip file. Choose this option if you have a 28.8K modem or faster connection to the internet.
quake106.zip

As seven smaller 1.4 meg zip files. Use this option if you have a 14.4K modem, or a slow connection. These seven files will fit onto seven 1.44 meg floppy disks that you can give to friends who don't have access to the internet.
qsw106_1.zip
qsw106_2.zip
qsw106_3.zip
qsw106_4.zip
qsw106_5.zip
qsw106_6.zip
qsw106_7.zip

Installation:

Regardless of which file(s) you choose to download, the installation process is the same for both.

Copy the .zip file(s) to a \temp directory.
Unzip the file(s).
Run the file install.bat from the \temp directory and follow the directions.

Setting Up A Shortcut To Quake:

The easiest way to launch a Multiplayer game of Quake is to setup a shortcut on your desktop.

Set up a shortcut to the file q95.bat in your Quake directory.
Bring up the Properties dialog box by clicking the right mouse button on your new shortcut, and selecting Properties.
Select the Program tab.
Select the Memory tab, and ensure that all 5 field are set to Auto
Select the Screen tab, and set Usage to Full Screen
Select the Misc tab.
Ensure the Allow screen saver checkbox is NOT checked.
Ensure the Always suspend checkbox IS checked.

Video Setup:

To see Quake run in all its high resolution splendor, you'll need to download the SciTech Display Doctor. You should only use this utility if your computer has a good graphics card with 2 megs of RAM, because the higher resolution video modes will slow the game down too much if you only have an average graphics card.
