Cheat Codes:

Most of these cheat codes will only work when you are playing Single Player Mode. To use a cheat, bring up the console ( by pressing the ~ on your keyboard when Quake has started ), and type them in. Typing in the code a second time usually toggles the cheat off.

Weapon Strategies:

Thanks to Cal Jacobson for the following weapons strategies.

  • Axe: God forbid that anybody actually need to use this. Gib-a-licious when quad-powered, however. Not too bad against dogs and good for finishing off grunts.
  • Single Barreled Shotgun: Your starting weapon. It has a longer range than double-barreled shotgun, and a faster fire rate, it is a good choice if your nailgun ammo is running low and you've got an ogre lobbing grenades your way from a distance. My personal weapon of choice against humans.
  • Double Barreled Shotgun: One shot from this puppy will drop a Knight at point-blank range; it wastes the grunts pretty quickly as well, and is especially messy when quad-powered. Fair against wizards and humans. Ogres can absorb a few shots from this.
  • Nailgun: This baby is good when you're under multiple attack, or trying to conserve ammo and need something with suppression power. Excellent against wizards; fair against knights.
  • Super Nailgun: What I use when low on health and faced with grenade-tossing ogres (and don't mind cooking off quite a bit of ammo). An excellent supression weapon; it is very difficult for an opponent to get a shot off at you when they're being tagged with this. A good weapon against demons and shamblers.
  • Grenade Launcher: A good tool when the enemy is below you. Also good for bouncing off walls when being chased or wanting to attack around corners. Requires a bit of skill to use effectively. One of the two weapons that work against zombies, and not good for shamblers as they only take half damage. Remember to keep your distance from the grenades.
  • Rocket Launcher: This seems to be the weapon of choice for most deathmatch players. A rocket ( and grenade ) is instant death if you don't have any armour. Excellent for long distance destruction and dealing to zombies. Fairly useless against a shambler as they only take half damage. Good for destroying groups of enemies.
  • Thunderbolt: Specializing in group destruction, the thunderbolt will go through any number of monsters or deathmatch opponents, doing the same damage to all, and only stopping for solid objects like walls. The cells don't last long so be weary if under pressure. Never fire the thunderbolt under-water unless you have the Pendant of Protection, as it kills EVERYTHING in the water.

Monster Tips:

  • Rottweiler: Watch out for them coming at you from behind, they are one of the faster movers. Two good blasts of the shotgun will put them out of their misery. Better to blast them before they jump on you.

  • Rotfish ( Registered ): Not much of a threat and pretty easy to kill, though can be annoying. Watch your toes if you're coming up for air.

  • Grunt: These guys are pretty slow but good marksmen, so if you come across a group of them get rid of them as fast as possible. For a bit of graphic splendour, killing them point-blank with the double barrel shotgun will disperse the grunts body parts very effectively.

  • Zombie: Keep out of range from these guys until you're prepared. If you hear a chilling wheezelike groan you know they are close. In a pack they can be very formidable, but a well placed grenade or rocket launcher (the only weapons able to destroy the zombie, unless you have quad damage ) will soon put a stop to these flesh rotting fiends.

  • Knight: These guys are fast. With a sword as their weapon they'll slice you before you know it. Don't get cornered, keep moving, the old hit and run manoevure works the best. A bit of strafing with the nailgun is also effective.

  • Enforcer ( Registered ): With more grunt than his grunt cousin, the enforcer boasts a laser attack. Nothing that a bit of strafe action with the nailgun can't handle.

  • Scrag: Don't forget to look above when you hear their whispering cry. These irritating creatures are a fairly easy kill if you can line them up in you sights long enough.

  • Death Knight ( Registered ): Better, stronger, and faster than the regular knight, these guys are able to fire spikes of fire from a distance.

  • Vore ( Registered ): These spider-like monstrosities hurl firepods that will chase you all over a level like a heat-seeking missle. The best way to deal with these vermin is to have a solid object, like a wall, nearby to duck behind when they shot at you. Once the firepod has exploded harmlessly on the wall, jump out and blast them, being ever-ready to jump for cover.

  • Spawn ( Registered ): Spawn are like bouncing blobs that have been breed with killer African bees. When they get in close they buzz around your head causing you damage, and explode like grenades when killed inflicting even more pain. Try to kill spawn from a distance, they're much easier and safer to hit that. If they get near to you, run away to give yourself some space, but be careful not to run into uncharted territory, as there's likely to be something horrible around the next corner.

  • Fiend: Described in the Quake manual as Organic Buzzsaws, these monsters are mean. They love to surprise you, can jump an awfully long way, and are just what you don't want to meet when low on ammo and injured. Sometimes they have problems moving through narrow doorways and passages, and can be picked off from a safe position. They are also quite slow just after they've landed, and you can usually get a few easy shots in.

  • Shambler: The biggest of all the monsters, shamblers fire bolts of energy similar to that fired by the Thunderbolt. Shamblers only take half damage from grenades and rockets, but the super nailgun is pretty effective at taking these guys down. They are also very dangerous at close range where they delight in ripping you to bits with their huge claws. An effective tactic, which takes lots of practice, is to run in close when they're about to fry you, fire off a few rounds, then run back out of claw range. Then run back in again, then out, then in, etc, etc. The shambler will keep switching attack modes, and if you time it right, you can kill them using only a shotgun.

Deathmatch Tactics:

As printed in Computer Life Magazine, here are some deathmatch tactics by John Romero and American McGee from id software:

  • Never Stop Running!
Never be anything less than a quick erratically moving target to your opponents.

  • Learn to strafe and attack simultaneously, this keeps you out of harms way while you rack up the frags.

  • Learn each level and establish a path that lets you collect all the weapons, health, and armor. Stick to this path, but vary it once in a while in order to avoid being ambushed by observant foes.

  • Listen closely to your surroundings. Learn which sounds come from which parts of the level. Then when you hear a certain sound or pattern of sounds, you'll know exactly where your foes are and you'll be prepared for them. Your buddies will swear you have ESP.

  • Learn free-look ( with the mouse or keyboard ) and make it a second nature. Remember that Quake is true 3D, and your buddies can jump you from above as well as attack you from below.

  • Develop proficiency with the rocket launcher. This is the most powerful weapon in Quake, aside from the lightning gun. If you can use it well, you're guaranteed to score many frags.
