Rumour Mill

Got a spare $30k?
Formosa paid $30,000 to NZGA so they could hold the tournament, a dangerous precedent if you ask me, this means only the exclusive rich clubs can afford to host the event.

Want to play in the Pro Am?
A rumored cool $1500 would get you a spot to play in the Pro-Am. For $1500 you get the customary NZ Open Shirt, cap and bata bullets, as well as sumptuous feast at the Pro-Am dinner (and Formosa really do it well with a chef ex the Regent). Prize table typically includes return trips to some exotic location for the prizewinners.

Formosa lost big time

Word is that Formosa lost $7,000 per day in revenue from green fees and bar/catering takings by hosting the Open. Apparently the Grange Golf Club was on standby to hold the Open is financial issues forced its move from Formosa. It's possible the downstream impact of the Asian Crisis is a lot closer than we think.

Its all good for NZ

It is estimated that the television coverage went to 300 million people world wide, measuring the worth of this promotion is unachievable but it should have significant impact on the Formosa Country Club and NZ as a tourist destination.

Laser Leishman lives!

His fellow TVNZ commentators have given Philip Leishman the Racing commentator turned Golf commentator a nickname, yes Philip is now known as 'Laser Leishman'. I wonder if its for quickness….

Wellington Winners

Patrons in Jacksons Bar in Petone picking up $2500 on Mathews win, Jacksons Bar has been a longtime supporter of the Shandon Golf Club where Matthew started playing.

Russell Gray, well known Dominion Sports Columinist is rumoured to have outlayed $500 at 35-1 for a $17,500 return.
