The Ugly |
|
"It's not a pretty picture" runs the promo line for local director Scott Reynold's debut feature The Ugly.
And it's true, The Ugly is not pretty, but nor should a movie about a serial killer. Simon (Paolo Rotundo) is a killer who has been locked away in a hospital, deemed unfit to stand trial for his crime. Karen (Rebecca Hobbs) is a keen, young psychologist who is called in to talk to Simon and prove that he is actually quite sane after all. Using flashbacks, Reynolds slowly sheds light on Simon's disturbing past before setting the film up for its alarming final scenario. With good performances from the two leads and a fittingly cheerless set, 'The Ugly' is a fairly gripping drama. So why then is it not anywhere as scary as you might hope?
